A certified medical transcriptionist can work in a supervisory position or a management position. Some medical transcriptionists work in hospitals and others work in doctor’s offices. Self-employment as independent contractors is the answer for some. Medical transcription employment involves finding mistakes and correcting them. The ability to accurately transcribe assessments of patients and treatments is a must. A medical transcription job consists of listening to a recorder dictation from a doctor or other health care provider and transcribing the information into a written report format. The information can then b retrieved even from a distance by the use of the internet through the use of a computer. Medical transcription can be done in the hospital through a remote transmission to a hospital, and also to an off site location to doctors and other health care professionals.
Employment in medical transcription involves the transcriptionist’s ability to type and format information about patient’s medical records in accordance with particular criteria. The transcript must be east to read which means that the transcriptionist must be able to spell all patient information correctly and to correct errors in medical terminology which directly reflects upon their amount and quality of schooling.
Medical transcription employment sometimes requires being certified. A CMT (Certified Medical Transcriptionist). There is no rule that requires a medical transcriptionist to be certified. However it does have its advantages. A CMT credential under their belt allows a transcriptionist can land a job a s a supervisor or as a manager in a medical transcription industry. Receiving certification involves money and time because there is a two part exam which must be passed. The first part of the exam involves academic knowledge of the requirements for being a competent medical transcriptionist. There is a fee involved which is $150. Retakes of the exam cost the same. The second exam involves performing transcription. It is a competency test requiring the applicant to accurately transcribe doctor’s dictation. There is also a fee for taking the exam. This fee varies. To be able to maintain certification a medical transcriptionist must be able to prove their progression in the field through taking continuing education programs approved by the American Association of Medical Transcriptionists.
