THE IMPORTANCE OF MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION CERTIFICATIONMedical transcription certification is being offered in both an online and classroom course. There are many different schools that dedicate themselves in training people in this profession. Most employees are looking for students with college or university degrees or certificates in medical transcription. When a person is attempting to acquire certification in this field, it may be a requirement by the transcription service that the person seeking a certificate complete a program approved by the Approval Committee for Certified Programs (ACCP). This committee was set in place by the AHDI (Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity). There are two AHDI programs—the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) program and the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) program. If a person has two years or less education in the transcription field, he can be an RMT. This certificate is given to those who complete and make a passing grade at the AHDI level exam for medical transcription. The CMT medical transcription certification requires two years of care experience using different reports, dictation, and format in special surgery settings. Also, the student must pass the exam for certification. Naturally, with the changing medications, procedures, and regulations in this field, a medical transcriptionist is required to and expected to update his or her degree or certificate in order to keep the skills in tact. Advancement courses are given at various schools for updating skills in transcribing. Certification is of utmost significance in that, to most medical organizations it proves your level of competence. It is smart and, in some instances, a requirement to be updated. Now, a person is not always required to complete an associate degree or medical transcription certification program, but it is a good recommendation. The courses educate the student in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, English grammar, and rules related to documenting health issues and personal and private information. The latter that I mentioned is extremely important. People are very concerned with privacy. Whenever a US medical transcription service outsources to another country, the issue of privacy many not be recognized or regulated by that other country. Some of these countries include India, Canada, The Philippines, and Pakistan. We must be careful that an outsource business for medical transcription signs a written agreement to keep the patient’s file information confidential as there is identifying information in the record. Most offshore facilities are not as interested in privacy as is the US.
There is a large selection of schools, both online and classroom, in which the appropriate medial transcription certification can be acquired. There are a number of popular and well known schools such as Kaplan University, AIU, Ashworth University, and many others. If you really expect to compete in this field, then it is necessary to obtain a medical transcription certification. |
